In Uganda, most (about 80%) people live in rural areas where people are poor and have inadequate knowledge in health matters, and where health services are inadequate and the levels of illness and death are very high. In addition, the population is growing rapidly, 3.3% annually, just like socio-economic development (schools, factories, industries, e.t.c) is also expanding, all of which demand for more health workers.
To address the situation of poor health, government strategy in health service delivery is Primary Health care which emphasized decentralization and infrastructure development.
This however has not been followed by training appropriate health workers. Instead, the emphasis has been placed on training expensive medical doctors and who, after their training , prefer to work at private urban-based facilities or go abroad for greener pastures.
Overall, they are very few qualified and appropriate health workers in Uganda due to few training facilities.
